Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
